I Am My Body

So, now that I got that off my chest, I want to talk about how I'm actively trying to come to terms with my body. As I mentioned earlier, I realize that our bodies do not dictate who we are as people. So, you're probably thinking that I'm absolutely crazy: trying to accept my body, realizing it doesn't dictate who I am, and the title of my blog. None of it fits together; they seem like three completely different theories. Particularly the blog title: I am My Body. At first glance, it doesn't make sense. It seems like I'm saying that our bodies dictate who we are, a complete contradiction to what I said above.

AU CONTRAIRE, mon ami. I think that we are our bodies, and yes, that our bodies are who we are. In the physical sense, our bodies are absolutely who we are. It's what we see, touch, and, if you catch me after a run, smell. Our bodies are who are, and we are our bodies. That does NOT mean, however, that our bodies determine our worth. We should embrace our bodies. You woke up this morning? Give yourself a pat on the back; your body kept you awake through the night. Get dressed? Your body is able to function and move in basic ways. Go for a run? Give yourself a hug; your body carried itself for miles and didn't complain once. We need to accept our bodies, the good and the (perceived) bad. And, I think think this part is more important, we need to embrace them. We need to love them, every part of them, from the itchy scalp to the weirdly shaped pinky toenail. Because after all, there really wouldn't be much to us without them.

  1. Well said. But I can't believe you exposed the secret of my pinkie toe on your blog! OMG, which takes me to an awful place of remembering reality TV. Honey Boo Boo's mother's forklift foot (look at your own risk!) http://jezebel.com/5939215/the-dramatic-unveiling-of-mamas-deformed-forklift-foot

    1. Ew ew ew I am kicking myself for looking at the picture. I didn't have the stomach to watch the video. And I didn't know that you had a weird pinkie toe! It must run in the family, because I was referring to my own deformed one. Love you! :)
